Left 36 years ago in 1972. I wanted to leave since 1964. I couldn't take the noise, traffic, tension, and especially the subway with the shoving, and pushing, and other unpleasant experiences. Relocated to the Midwest. What surprised me was when the light changed, and traffic did not immediately move, nobody honked their horn. In fact, it was considered bad manners. Also, I've noticed in the Midwest, that many people are turned off by tiping. They sometimes act insulted if they are offered a tip. Also, in the Midwest, people are more likely to say "excuse me", rather than just bumping into someone and continuing; and, people in this area, are also less likely to cut in line ahead of someone. On the downside, the restaurants in this area, do not compare to NYC. Also, the choice of men's suits is not as good as in NYC. On the upside, the cost of homes is much lower, as are utilities, and property taxes.
