The new model that I remember so well was the '55 Chevy Bel Air which I think was the first "cool" car appealing to younger drivers.
My older cousin Jimmy talked his Dad into buying one.
His family had moved from Flatlands to Lindenhurst into a classic brand new suburban development in '52 and Jimmy became the "All American Boy" - lettering in football, wrestling and lacrosse in his '55 HS graduating class, and working as a caddy, life guard.etc.
He would become a homicide detective in Suffolk County, then a private eye and the chief of the local volunteer fire department.
Until the '64 GTO came along that '55 Chevy and my cousin Jimmy were the coolest.
