The attitude of mlb was expressed by Warren Giles who was President of the NL at the meeting in May 1957 when permission was granted for the two franchises to move who when asked how the NL could not have a franchise in NY uttered the words, "Who needs New York."

As far as villains, there is another little known story. The St. Louis Browns realized they had no future in St. Louis and wanted to move to LA. They did a study to show it was feasible (this was a time before jet travel). While I have never been able to track down whether they had enough support among the AL owners for such a move, a meeting was scheduled in Chicago to discuss this. Unfortunately for Brooklyn, the meeting had to be cancelled. Why? President Roosevelt had asked that everybody carry a speech he was about to make to Congress. The date? 08 December 1941.

So add to the list of pos's who deprived Brooklyn of its baseball team, a team that entered the NL in 1890 you can add the name of Admiral Yamamoto!
