The drop in Dodgers attendance was replicated throughout major league baseball due to migration to the suburbs during a period of great prosperity when people could buy homes over living in city apartments. Not only in the NYC region but throughout the country. Hence, Flushing would have made total sense. But then again, the Dodgers were still the biggest money makers in baseball thanks to their lucrative radio/tv contracts. And the Mets were eventually to prove when they drew 2.5 million when they became good.
None of this excuses what O'Malley did and was allowed to do by mlb.
