The greatest loss of life for New York City firefighters, prior to 9/11/01, occurred on Friday, Oct. 21, 1966. There was a fire in a commercial building on E. 22nd St., in the Flatiron District. The firefighters attempted to gain entrance to the building through a neighboring building on E.23rd St. Unfortunately, when they gained entrance, because of the raging fire next door, the support beams were affected, causing the roof to collapse on them, killing twelve of New York's bravest.
