Matty, at P.S. 217, we enjoyed a few field trips to a number of very interesting locations; namely, the Taystee Bread factory in Brooklyn. I don't remember the street that it was on, but I remember that the factory was located in a very large building, in an industrial area of Brooklyn. We were shown how the bread was baked, (there was a very large machine involved in the baking process), and we were given packaged samples of delicious white bread to take home. The aroma of fresh baked bread, was something that I distinctly remember. The trip was during the bitterly cold winter, and that warm, fresh bread was outstanding. At some point, that factory moved out of Brooklyn to New Jersey.
In addition to that field trip, we also took two other trips, namely to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and the Brooklyn Museum. The last field trip was to the Hayden Planetarium in Manhattan. Those trips took place in the fourth and fifth grades. There were no other field trips. I've always wondered who decided which classes went to a specific location, and also who decided the frequency of those field trips?
