I agree with you on this. My old neighborhood , Inwood , was developed just about a century ago following the construction of the IRT #1 train .The newly constructed apartment houses, mostly 5 story walk-ups, had such amenities as court yards, fountains, marble steps , shrubbery, and decorative exterior window moldings. some buildings even had names. These structures had character, unlike many of the "matchstick" towers going up in Manhattan today.
